Especially for the world's most powerful & most advanced country - the US, how the people here have treated these 2 issues is so pathetic. People & literature & media in most other countries accept those 2 theories almost universally. It was exactly the same with tobacco - instead of revealing that smoking is bad for your health, the tobacco industry made ads & hired doctors and scientists to lie that smoking is good for your health. People refuse to make that intellectual leap to accept the truth as true & see the wrong in their reasonings. Always make enough counter-arguments against the truth to bring about a stasis & inaction within the government. Make just, just enough amount of "no"s so that there's "no consensus". Wikipedia epitomizes this cynical current-day reality.
