Perhaps best known for its "genius grants" for MacArthur Fellows, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is a US-based philanthropic foundation. "In addition to selecting the MacArthur Fellows, the Foundation works to defend human rights, advance global conservation and security, make cities better places, and understand how technology is affecting children and society."[1]

The MacArthur Fellowship program "awards five-year, unrestricted fellowships to individuals across all ages and fields who show exceptional merit and promise of continued creative work." There are no applications for the fellowship; the Foundation selects individuals internally and announces the awards.[2]

Beyond financial auditing, the Foundation has a policy of inviting external review of its grantmaking strategies. [3]
